Bulgaria hopes for TB vaccine against corona virus
In the global war against covid-19, scientists are investigating whether a century-old tuberculosis vaccine could provide some additional protection against the novel coronavirus, according to AFP.
Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) was developed in 1921 by two French researchers, Albert Calmet and Camille Guerin, as a vaccine against tuberculosis.
For its part, the WHO said last month that there was no evidence that BCG protects people from covid 19 infections.
However, Bulgarian scientists suggest that the high rate of BCG vaccination - as well as the initial lockdown - helped the Balkan country avoid the worst of this epidemic.
"BCG creates a strong immune system. And when we are waiting for a specific treatment or vaccine against the novel corona virus, we must keep our regulations exempt. Bogdan Petronov, a professor of immunology, told BNT on public television.
