New forecasts estimate a staggering increase: While 3.4 million people experienced severe food insecurity in 2019, that number could quadruple this year in one of the world's most vulnerable regions.
"We are entering a very complex phase," said Miguel Berto, WFP's regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean. "That's what we call the epidemic of hunger."
